St. Matthew's Calling by Christ – Caravaggio
St. Matthew's Calling by Christ – Caravaggio
This artwork by Caravaggio shows Jesus calling the tax collector Matthew to be an Apostle. This dramatic portrayal shows the moment in which Christ speaks and Matthew pauses in uncertainty before leaving his piles of money to follow Jesus. In the painting, the light on the Savior's face is reflected on Matthew's, symbolizing the light of Faith. Christ's outstretched hand resembles that of Adam in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, representing Christ's redemptive role as the New Adam.
